ABSENCES/TARDIES – ATTENDANCE
Utah Compulsory Attendance Law mandates children will be in school on a regular basis. Excessive tardies and absences will result in a meeting with the principal and parents. Further disciplinary action will be taken if the problem is not resolved in a timely manner. We can not meet our goals without your child.
Whenever your child is absent, please call and notify the office at (801) 452-4522. When your child returns please send a written explanation to the teacher. This provides useful information to the classroom teacher, allowing a smooth return for the pupil.
Homework will be made available in the office upon request. This will be available at the end of the day. It is extremely frustrating for children to get behind in their work and return to school unprepared.
Students arriving late to school must check in at the office and obtain a late admit. The late admit will be given to the teacher for admittance to the classroom. If your student is late due to a doctor or dental appointment, please ask for a note from them and turn it in to the office at the time of admittance to school.
BOOKS AND MATERIALS
Students are responsible for all textbooks issued to them. If a textbook is lost or damaged the student will be assessed a fee for replacement. At the beginning of the year, students will check their textbooks carefully for any damage and sign a paper letting their teacher know of the condition.
BUILDING SECURITY
To ensure that the building remains a safe and secure place for your child to attend school, the following procedures will be enforced. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.
1. All visitors must check in at the office as soon as they enter the building. Visitor tags will be issued and must be worn by visitors to help students and staff recognize them as authorized visitors.
2. The front door closest to the office will remain unlocked during the school day. Other doors may be locked except when being used by groups of students to pass to and from activities.
3. Anyone on school property unknown to staff will be approached if they do not have a visitor name tag.
DRESS CODE
The Board of Education of the Weber School District recognizes that standards of proper dress and grooming affect the behavior of students attending school. Students should dress appropriately so they do not distract from the learning environment and detract from the learning experience. These standards are listed below:
1. Emphasis is placed on neatness, cleanliness, safety, and modesty in personal appearance.
2. Clothing not ordinarily worn in the workplace may not be worn at school, such as: robes, pajamas, house slippers, etc, unless it is an approved administrative school activity.
3. Tank tops (sleeveless shirts) halter tops, bare midriffs, pants that excessively sag or expose the buttock or underwear, are examples of inappropriate dress. Students may be asked to call home for a change of clothing if dressed inappropriately.
4. Clothing that is extreme, sloppy, for protest, definance, dissent, or displays illegal substances, or is obscene, suggestive, or shows inappropriate words or pictures is not permitted.
5. Shorts, skirts or dresses must be below the mid thigh.
6. Clothing attachments or accessories that could be considered unsafe, distracting or disruptive to the educational process (i.e., chains, spikes) are not allowed.
7. Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times. No wheeled shoes are allowed on school grounds.
8. Good manners dictate that no hats or headwear are permitted in the school building.
9. Apparel or accessories with gang symbols, moniker, insignias or other gang indentifiers are not allowed.
10. Sunglasses and head phones are not allowed during school hours.
11. Hair or makeup that is so conspicuous , extreme, odd in color or style that it draws undue attention, disrupts, or tends to disrupt or interferes with the learning atmosphere at school will not be allowed.
FIELD TRIPS
Throughout the year children may be involved in field trips. These are extensions of the classroom experience and serve to connect classroom lessons to community resources. Supervision on field trips is provided primarily by staff members. For certain trips, parents may be asked to chaperone. Other relatives, friends, or siblings will not be allowed to supervise or attend the field trip.
FIRE DRILLS/EARTHQUAKE DRILLS
Required monthly evacuation drills are conducted to practice safe exit from the school in case any emegency occurs that requires vacating the school.
MEDIA CENTER
Students are encouraged to check out materials and books from our Media Center and return them by the due date. There are no overdue fines; however, if materials are lost or damaged the student will be assessed a fee dependent on the cost of replacement.
MEDICATION
When a child must take over-the-counter or prescription medication, proper paperwork must be filled out with the office including physicians authorization. The medication will be kept in a locked drawer in the office. The student will report to the offce for distribution by the office staff.
If the child uses an inhaler for asthma, the physician may authorize the child to carry the inhaler. Abuse of this privilege will negate authorization to carry an inhaler.
RELEASING OF STUDENTS
Students are to remain under the supervision of school staff during regular school hours. Parents must report to the office if they need to check out their child. For your child's safety, students will not be released to anyone except custodial parents, guardians, or persons listed on the emergency contact list unless prior arrangements have been made with the office. Teachers have been instructed not to release a child unless notified by the office. The office personnel will call the student down and release the student to the approved person.
Students should never leave the school campus during school hours without checking out at the office.
SCHOOL LUNCH
Students may participate in the school's hot lunch program or bring a cold lunch from home. Soda pop is highly discouraged as we are striving to emphasize healthy lunches. We would like to remind parents that lunch money is needed regularly. Please check on account balances to ensure they don't go into the negative balance. A parent may pay daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly.
SCHOOL PHONE
The school telephone is reserved for student's emergency use and is available with teacher permission. Arrangement for play, rides home or calling friends do not constitute emergencies.
Normally, neither a teacher or a student will be called from the classroom to accept telephone calls.
SCHOOL VISITATIONS
We encourage you to visit our school. Please check in at the office for a visitor's pass. Teachers are busy conducting classroom activities and are not available for personal conversations regarding your child. If you need questions answered, please set up a conference time when you can have the teacher's full attention.
TOBACCO FREE CAMPUS
The Weber School Board has adopted a policy that prohibits smoking or any other use of tobacco products on district property. This includes, schools, district office buildings, playgrounds, outside areas, and field trips.
SCHOOLWIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SYSTEMS
Our school is continuing to focus on reinforcement of positive behavior. It is our goal to be mindful of the need to deliver more praise than criticism and teach students appropriate behavior in public areas. We hope to continue to involve parents in this process.
DIGITAL MEDIA DEVICES
Roosevelt Elementary is committed to providing a learning environment free from distraction. The use of digital devices, including cell phones, may infringe on the privacy and rights of others and cause disruptions in the classroom. In order to maximize a positive learning environment at Roosevelt Elementary, the following procedures concerning the use of digital media devices will apply. Digital media devices (DMD) include, but are not limited to gaming like Nintendo DS's, cameras, music like IPOD's, cell phones, recorders, etc.
DMD's should not be used during school hours. They are not to be seen, heard, or used in anyway.
We recommend cell phones remain at home. However, if your student does bring a phone he/she will need to check it in at the office before school and pick it up after school. Any violations of this will result in confiscation and suspensions. As with other DMD's cell phones are not to be used during school hours.
Misuse of this policy will result in the device being confiscated and parents or guardians will need to pick up the device at the end of the school day from the office.
Two offenses in a school year will lead to student suspension.
The office phone is available for students to contact parents in case of a school issue or emergency.
School personnel will not be held responsible for digital media devices that are lost, stolen or broken.
School administration or designee may search digital media devices based on reasonable suspicion that they may contain evidence of a violation of school/district rules or policies.
District policies, state and federal laws regarding illegal content of devices will be enforced.
