Parents and Students,

This year is off to a great start!  We have been busy practicing the Skills for Learning.  These included Focusing Attention, Listening, and Self-talk.  These skills show respect for others (help us keep friends) and help us to be better learners.

      Listening Tips:
Eyes on the Speaker
Don't Interrupt
Ask Questions to Clarify
Repeat what you heard to show that you Understand

Our October Counselor Collaborative Lessons will include Being Assertive, Feeling Confident, and Identifying and Managing Feelings.

Being assertive means asking for what you need in a calm and firm voice.  We will learn the differences between being passive, assertive, and aggressive.  Assertiveness skills help us to have better self-esteem, friendships, and resolve conflicts.

     Assertiveness Tips:
Face the Person you are Talking to
Keep your Head Up and Shoulders Back
Use a CALM, Firm Voice
Use RESPECTFUL Words

We will also learn to identify our feelings and feelings in others.  We will learn to read face clues, body clues, and situation clues.  These skills build empathy for others.  When we have empathy, conflicts, and social aggression (bullying) are minimized and friendships increase.

We have also had our first Raptor Academic Awards and Character Awards for Respect.  October’s Character Value that we are focusing on is “Always Caring”.

I am looking forward to another fantastic month!  Roosevelt Elementary is a great place to be.  As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me.

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

What a wonderful time of the year! I personally love the special spirit of joy, sharing and giving.  We are so fortunate at Roosevelt; all of you were very generous in donating canned good items, coats, blankets, etc. to our food drive in November.  All items were donated to the Lantern House and Roosevelt was awarded $100.00 for the items collected.  We will use this $100.00 and any coins we collect for Coins for Christmas to support families who attend Roosevelt.

A huge thank you to our amazing PTA.  The PTA Reflections program ran smoothly and was a lot of fun.  We held the district awards night on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the Pleasant Valley Library. Congratulations to all of the students who participated. I want to thank our PTA and Community Council who make it possible to have so many extra programs that enrich our school and community.  The programs they run support our district philosophy of teaching the whole child.  When you are at the school volunteering or stopping by to pick up your child, I hope you will have time to take the opportunity to walk through the school and see all the amazing things taking place each day at Roosevelt!  We are using the Leader in Me program and posting visible data throughout the school.  Our attendance data is posted in our lunchroom.  We continue to have over 95% attendance in each grade level.  Thank you parents for getting your children to school each day on time.  It makes a huge difference in your child’s learning.

We will be having a choir Christmas performance on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 7:00 PM.  This concert will be at the Pleasant Valley Library.  We appreciate Mrs. Parkinson and all the effort she has put in preparing for our musical concerts.  We would also like to thank Karen Miller for accompanying them on the piano.  Our choir students will also be performing at the school on Monday, December 18th at 7:00 pm if you would like to come and watch them, we look forward to having the parents, grandparents and family members come and watch our children share their amazing talents of singing .

I would like to thank all of our parents who are driving safely through our parking lot and watching for our little children.   Thanks, also, for teaching your children to use the crosswalk and to watch both ways before crossing.  It is all of our responsibility to keep each child safe.  This has always been one of my priorities.  When children are safe they are able to learn.

Just a quick reminder…We dismiss for winter recess on Thursday, December 21st.  This will be a early out day at 1:15 PM.  School will resume on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.  Our children bring us a special joy during this season as we share time together as a family.  As the year draws to an end, nearly all of us in most occupations, are fortunate enough to receive some extra time off. The best thing to spend on your children is time! The gifts we give provide momentary pleasures that fade over time and are insignificant compared to the time and love we give each day throughout the year. It is my hope that you cherish the moments of the season with your children, family and friends. These are the experiences that give richness and meaning to our lives and are to be treasured and fondly remembered in years to come.  We at Roosevelt Elementary wish you and yours, a wonderful happy, healthy, safe, holiday season!

Sincerely,
Kitty Barney, Principal
